To Stitch or Not Stitch
One of my favorite parts of a good leather project is how the stitching adds to the final piece. Thereโs just something nice about seeing thread outline a collar or be hidden away under the leather even as it still holds everything together. Even as I get tired of hand-stitching, I still look forward to a final product that has a stitching design that enhances the project as a whole.
Unfortunately good hand-stitching takes a lot of time. So, with many projects where time is a consideration, Iโm forced to ask whether stitching is always worth it. On one hand, stitching is really nice for some projects, but then stitching things by hand takes a lot of time which would drive the price of products higher in order to offset the time needed to produce the. So when Iโm creating something like a cuff or a ball gag or anything in between, one of my first questions becomes:
โShould I make a design that needs a lot of stitching or do I avoid stitching to save time and overall cost?โ
But I am an indecisive person so ultimately when it comes to the products and projects found here in this store, I will do my best to offer hand-stitched products that cost a bit more and un-stitched products that my be a little simpler in design and cheaper as a result.
One of the things I do hope to do is make enough that I can invest in a nice sewing machine designed to stitch leather. They are expensive and a huge investment for me at this time, but they would go a long way to bring the time spent stitching down which would allow me to produce more high quality products in a shorter time and hopefully for a lowered price.
But let me know what you think. Do you prefer the stitching or do you like the simpler look better? What else would you like to see from this little shop?
