The Lowdown on Leathers
I use a variety of leather to create my various custom products and commissions. One of the questions I get often enough is what leathers I have right now. To answer that, I’m going to create and link to this blog as a sort of living list of the leathers we currently have in stock or have coming soon. I’ll also do my best to showcase some of the features of each leather, how its been used in past projects, and any other important details. Of course, if I’m missing something, please reach out an let me know! I’ll be updating this post regularly as I get or run out of various leathers.

Dyeable Leather
IN STOCK – Vegetable Tanned Cowhide

This unassuming leather is a staple in leatherwork and an ideal leathercrafting canvas. The Vegetable tanning process uses natural tannins to preserve the leather and strengthen it for crafting purposes. This leather is relatively stiff, easy to shape, cut stamp, laser engrave or work with, and can be dyed into most colors and various combinations of colors with the right practice and technique.
This leather is the leather used for my standard black leather as well.

Black Leather
IN STOCK – Black Deer-tanned Cowhide

Luxuriously soft to the touch, flexible, and durable against wear and rubbing, this chrome tanned leather makes for a perfect padded backing for any collar or worn accessory. While the leather itself is not firm enough to use as the main material of most projects, it is perfectly suited to be paired with another leather to provide a level of comfort that is exceptional.

IN STOCK – Black Lightweight Designer Leather

This exceptionally thin chrome tanned leather is lightweight and smooth to the touch. It makes an excellent backing for items that need a little cushion to prevent chafing or rubbing, without feeling padded. Its lightweight nature makes it well suited for loose fitting items or for use in warmer climates.

IN STOCK – Black Kodiak Oil-Tanned Cowhide

Tough, durable, resistant to the elements, and still supple to the touch, this oil-tanned leather is well suited to use where exposure to water is more likely. It is firm enough to serve as the primary leather in a project but is still soft and has a stretch to it that keeps it from digging into skin like more firm leathers can. Whether its on its own, used as a durable, sweat resistant backing, or paired with another leather backing, the Kodiak shines as a lovely addition.

IN STOCK – Black Designer Upholstery Cowhide

This chrome tanned leather was tanned primarily for upholstery use, but is very suitable for other projects and designs as well. Somewhere between the firmness of the deer-tanned leather and the oil tanned leather above it is not quite stiff enough to be used regularly without another leather or frame helping to keep its given shape.

This Italian leather is a high quality, stiffer leather coming from the Conceria Walpier Tannery in Tuscany, Italy. The leather itself is relatively stiff, easy to shape, cut stamp, laser engrave or mold as needed. It has a rich and silky color that will patina slightly over time.

Purple Leather
IN STOCK – Purple Aurora Cowhide

This signature chrome tanned leather has a silky finish and softer more flexible nature while retaining its strength that makes it a great choice for a variety of projects. It is often one of the first leathers I go to when wanting to make a comfortable but strong collar, cuff set or anything else.
The silky finish naturally takes creases and scratches, developing a patina of use over time that provides a vintage, well loved appearance.

Blue Leather
IN STOCK – Navy Utility Cowhide

This thicker chrome tanned leather has a smooth silky finish and soft but durable nature that makes it a good candidate for projects that will be used heavily or exposed to the elements more frequently.
This leather does not take shaping and stamping well, but is still very usable for flatter projects and for laser engraving.

IN STOCK – Dusty Teal Saffiano Cowhide

Saffiano leather is a premium chrome tanned leather originating from The Prada brand in Italy. Now used in a wide variety of companies, this leather is thinner, but retains a moderate stiffness thanks to the laminated surface that is often pebble grained or sometimes smooth as in this case. Unlike some of the other leathers I have, this one will not patina or change color over time from use. The surface laminate is also very durable against water, dirt and general exposure.

Red Leather
IN STOCK – Wine Red Vaquero Cowhide

This leather is a chrome tanned leather that has been drum dyed to create a deep color that runs through the whole leather and creates a beautiful patina on the surface when bent, creased, worked. This leather has a similar stiffness to my aurora purple leather and is a great primarily leather choice for its striking appearance and its ability to take stamping, working, and laser engraving well.

White Leather
IN STOCK – White Italian Pebble Grain Cowhide

This is a new chrome tanned leather I haven’t worked much with yet though I expect it will be a versatile one much like the black oil-tanned leather above. It is somewhat stiff and has little to no stretch but is supple enough that I feel it can be possibly used as a backing (a future special project.)

Specialty Leather
IN STOCK – Butterfly Printed Veg Tanned Sheepskin

This Veg tanned sheepskin is so incredibly soft and supple. It is not firm at all and has a lot of stretch to it which allows it to be an excellent padding or liner for various projects. It’s softer even than the luxuriously soft deer tanned cowhide described above and as such is more prone to ripping with very strenuous use. However, adding a tough leather to pair with it can provide the rigidity that makes this a decorative flair for any project.
